What we make up and post

Five small lines, kept narrow on purpose so every piece can be described properly.

Acetate claw clips

Three jaw widths for fine to thick hair. Steel spring, polished edges, rounded teeth that will not snag a twist.

Satin and velvet bows

Tied by hand and fixed either to a snap clip or to a French barrette, so you can pick the back that suits your hair.

Scrunchies

Silk-blend and velvet, sold one at a time or as a trio. The elastic is fully covered, with no metal join.

Pearl and enamel slides

Slim slides for a side part or the hair behind an ear, finished with glass pearls or a baked enamel face.

Headbands

Padded and knotted bands with a flexible core, covered in velvet or satin and finished inside with soft fabric.

A single plait: the sort of twist a medium claw clip is cut to hold.

How the shop works, from first click to the pouch

Pretty Effect is a small online shop in Adelaide. There is no shopfront and no salon chair: just a packing bench, a drawer of measured stock and a mailbox that someone reads every weekday. We chose a short list on purpose. A shop with five hundred clips cannot tell you how wide each jaw opens; a shop with nine pieces can, and does.

Sizing comes first. Claw clips are listed by the width of the jaw when closed, bows by their width tip to tip, slides by their length and headbands by the width at the crown. If you are between sizes, the claw clip page walks through hair length and thickness, and you are welcome to write to us with a description of your hair before ordering.

  1. Choose and send. Pick your pieces and quantities on the checkout page and send the form. Nothing is charged at this stage.
  2. We confirm by e-mail. Within one working day we reply with the order, the postage, the total and a secure payment link.
  3. We pack it. Once payment arrives, the order is packed into a reusable cotton pouch within two working days and posted with tracking.
  4. It arrives. If anything is wrong when you open it, our returns page explains exactly what we do next.

What we value is plain description: a clip should be what its listing says, in the colour the listing names. Our refusals are short too. We sell no cosmetics and no liquids for hair, we offer no salon or styling appointments, we do not make custom or personalised pieces, and we do not sell wholesale or to other shops. Keeping to that list is what lets a small studio answer every message properly.

Questions people ask before ordering

Which claw clip size suits long, thick hair?

Go for the large clip, 11 cm across the jaw. It closes around a full twist of long, heavy hair without the teeth straining apart. If your hair is long but fine, the medium 8 cm clip usually holds better, because a large jaw closed around a slim twist tends to slip.

Are the clips acetate or plastic?

Every claw clip we list is cellulose acetate: a material made from plant cellulose, cut and polished rather than injection-moulded. It is still a kind of plastic in the broad sense, so we say exactly that on each listing. The springs and hinge pins are steel.

How long does shipping take?

We pack orders within two working days of payment. After that, parcels to Adelaide and the rest of South Australia usually arrive in one to three working days, interstate in two to six, and remote areas of WA and the NT can take up to eight. The shipping page lists every rate.

Can I return a clip I've worn?

Change-of-mind returns are for unworn pieces in their pouch, within 30 days. Once a clip or scrunchie has been in someone's hair we cannot sell it again, so we cannot take it back for a change of mind. A piece that arrives faulty is different: write to us whether or not you have tried it on.

Do you ship to New Zealand?

Yes. Postage to New Zealand is a flat A$18.00 per order and parcels usually land in six to ten working days. Any import charges on the New Zealand side are set by New Zealand, not by us. We do not post anywhere else overseas at the moment.

Do you sell gift cards?

No, we do not sell gift cards or vouchers. What we can do is post an order straight to someone else with a short handwritten note, and leave the prices off the packing slip. Put the note in the message box at checkout.
